Warning once you make it to Costa Rica, you will never want leave. From its stunning scenery and adventurous sightseeing to its laid-back vibe and friendly people, Costa Rica has it all. It’s a destination that offers a little bit of everything and a lot of everything you’re looking for your next vacation. Costa Rica was my first trip outside my usual destinations, and it remains one of my all-time favorites.
#1 San Jose
When you fly into Costa Rica, you’ll likely land at one of the main airports. The most common arrival point is Juan Santamaría International Airport in San Jose, the capital and geographical heart of the country. San Jose itself is a bustling city with a blend of colonial and historical architecture, worth exploring for 1-2 nights. However, to experience the true beauty of Costa Rica, plan to spend most of your time exploring other amazing destinations across the country.
#2 La Fortuna
If you’re looking for my heart, I left it in La Fortuna. It’s such an amazing place! La Fortuna is home to the iconic Arenal Volcano, where you can enjoy a variety of activities like hiking to breathtaking waterfalls, exhilarating white-water rafting at different levels, horseback riding, ATV rides, and more.
La Fortuna offers a blend of adventure and relaxation with hotels featuring hot springs heated by natural volcanic waters. Some hot springs are free to visit, but for those on a budget, I recommend staying at a nearby hotel and purchasing a daily pass. This way, you can enjoy the mineral pools all day without the high cost of a standard hotel stay. Many hotels offer affordable daily passes, making it a great way to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the area.
#3 Monteverde
Get ready to witness every shade of green imaginable. Monteverde is a must-see, especially its renowned cloud forest preserve. The two reserves in Monteverde offer abundant opportunities for exploration, adventure, and learning about these unique ecosystems. From history to excellent resorts and guided adventures, there’s something here for everyone.
